W 2004 roku Therion wydał w sumie trzy albumy: „Sirius B”, „Lemuria” oraz opisywany dziś, Riders of the Apocalypse. Wprawdzie ten ostatni ujrzał światło dzienne pod inna marką, ale w praktyce nie zmienia to niczego, bo i skład ten sam i, w gruncie rzeczy, muzyka. Riders of the Apocalypse muzycznie i brzmieniowo brzmi dokładnie jak wydawnictwa kanoniczne (to samo studio), nieco inaczej porozkładano za to akcenty i w miejsce aranżacji typowych dla Theriona tamtego okresu wmontowano growle i thrashowe tempa. Dla leni (tl;dr): Demonoid to death/thrashowy brat-bliźniak Theriona. Wystarczy jeden rzut oka na linie melodyczne i nawet Stevie Wonder nie miałby wątpliwości, że wymienione powyżej dzieła wyszły spod ręki tego samego kompozytora. Nie ma się co za dużo rozpisywać, bo wystarczy odpalić którykolwiek krążek z podwójnego „Sirius B” / „Lemuria”, nastawić na jeden z bardziej narowistych utworów pokroju „Typhon” by uchwycić ideę stojącą za projektem o nazwie Demonoid. Tu i ówdzie czytam jaki to Riders of the Apocalypse specjalny, wyjątkowy, a prawda jest taka, że to gówno prawda. Nic wyjątkowego ani specjalnego na nim nie znajdziecie, wrażenie „już to kiedyś słyszałem” okaże się czymś więcej niż wrażaniem i będzie Wam towarzyszyło od pierwszych do ostatnich sekund trwania albumu. Oczywiście krążek jest szybszy, bardziej agresywny i „mroczny” niż Therion, ale różnica jest raczej ilościowa niźli jakościowa. Bo na Riders of the Apocalypse i babeczka pośpiewa i kilka melodii zaleci auto plagiatem. Jak już pewnie wspomniałem, z muzycznego punku widzenia Demonoid Ameryki nie odkrył, ba, nawet nie był w pobliżu łodzi – by pozostać przy marynistycznej metaforze. Ale… ale z czysto degustacyjnego punktu widzenia krążek jest jak najbardziej zacny, przyswaja się go bez przysypiania i ogólnego zmęczenia. Czyli zupełnie jak Therion. Przeszło trzy kwadranse mijają szybko jak kariera Kubicy w Formule 1, niejednokrotnie album zaproponuje całkiem sensowne melodie, zaskoczy ciekawymi riffami bądź solówkami. Słucha się go naprawdę przyjemnie. I tak jak za walory kompozycyjne i aranżacyjne raczej wielkiego uznania nie zdobędzie, tak za całokształt i miodność uznanie fanów zdobyć może. Bo Demonoid to muzyka nie tylko dla pro-symfonicznych miłośników Theriona, ale i koneserów ostrzejszych (niewiele, ale zawsze) brzmień. Dobry z plusem się należy.

DEMONOID re-issue, THERION’s Christoffer Johnsson return to Death metal! Therion entered a new path late 90’s with Therion. Of course Therion was one of the forefathers of Swedish death metal. After a decade the more progressive and gothic elements took over and made Therion the band it is nowadays. The death metal blood in Johnson was still running however and found a way out in the formation of Demoniod. The main goal was playing pure old school Swedish Death metal. Johnson was joined by his Therion bandmember Kristian Niemann on guitars (Sorcerer, ex-Snowy Shaw (live)) and completed by Johan Niemann on bass (Evergrey, Hollingshead, ex-Mind's Eye, ex-Tears of Anger, ex-Therion, ex-Tiamat) and Richard Evensand on drums (Ebony Tears, ex-Chimaira, ex-Sorcerer, ex-Therion, ex-Soilwork)
This is quite a good little album, full of bad fucking ass old school death/thrash riffs and an overall stench of Sweden. If one goes in with no expectations (and believe me, after listening to a recent Therion song, I went in with the death metal bar set pretty low), you'll be entertained.
The album layout and concept is certainly worth noting, too. Great cover art, a nice picture to complement each song, and a very goofy drawing in the back of the bandmembers as...horsemen? Vikings? retards? Got me. Speaking of goofy, there are some typical bad translations throughout the lyrics sheet and in the "explanation section" at the beginning of the booklet. This storyline is pretty silly to begin with, but I tend to like concept albums anyway, even if the idea is kind of half-baked.
Forget all that though, how about the music? Each song has something to offer, and months after buying it I often find one track or another stuck in my head. One drawback to the music as a whole is that some tracks are simply too drawn out. Death/thrash songs in general should stick to around 3:30 in my opinion, or else they wear out their welcome. For a slow track, I'll let 'em get away with 4:30, but that's it. Of course rules are meant to be broken - my favorite track on here is 6:17. But tunes like "Wargod" and "Death" are just keep going and going, and while it kicks ass for the first few minutes the skip button finger gets itchy.
Length issues aside, there are many bruising tracks to be found on RIDERS. "Firestorms" burns, "Witchburners" accuses, "The Evocation" calls unto thee despite some spoken parts and clean female vocals (for once, actually adding atmosphere instead of sounding stupid), and "Arrival of the Horsemen," uh, arrives like a motherfucker despite its length. "Arrival" is without a doubt my favorite track and completely kills throughout, even the slow and spooky intro riff. Each horseman introduces himself, and the chorus of "War, plague, starvation, death!" is easy enough to remember.
My only real beef is with "Wargods," which would have been one hell of an opener if they'd just cut a minute off. Actually, the main riff isn't that inspiring either. Poor choice for an opener overall methinks. And that little jazzy part in the midst of "Hunger My Consort"...is it necessary? No, and I laughed the first time I heard it, but now I've accepted it just like the clean parts in "The Evocation." The rest of the apocalyptica on here is perfect for the lover of Swedeath and death/thrash in all of us.
