Reedycja kultowego albumu nagranego w 1993 oku w Sunlight Studios przez Thomasa Skogsberga. Zespół dowodzony przez Jonasa Stahlhammara z GOD MACABRE/MACABRE END. Progresywny szwedzki death metal! Okładka autorstwa Kristiana Wahlina (Dissection, Emperor, Tiamat).
Oto kolejna pozycja z cyklu Kącika Oldschoolowego Deathmetalowca. Jedyne EP szwedzkiego Utumno po dziś dzień jest uważane za jedną z największych kolekcjonerskich perełek w gatunku. "Across The Horizon" to sześć utworów z czego dwa z nich znalazły się na drugim demie zespołu "The Light Of Day". Na całe szczęście, status kultowego materiału nie został nadany bezpodstawnie, gdyż Utumno zaoferowało granie zdecydowanie powyżej ówczesnej średniej.
"Across The Horizon" wyłamuje się znacząco ze szwedzkich standardów deathmetalowych. Zawiedzie się ten, kto spodziewa się po tej płycie grania w stylu Grave, Dismemeber, Unleashed czy Entombed. Utumno zaproponowało o wiele bardzie ambitne i klimatyczne granie, choć wciąż oparte na klasycznym, metalowym instrumentarium.
Moją uwagę zwróciły dwie rzeczy. Pierwszą z nich jest praca perkusji - wyjątkowo gęsta, jakby wręcz jazzująca. Nie wiem czy jest to zasługa lekko przybrudzonego, ale selektywnego brzmienia, czy po prostu Johan Halberg operował takim stylem, ale jak na szwedzkie standardy partie tego instrumentu brzmią dość technicznie (skojarzenia w kierunku Immolation są jak najbardziej na miejscu).
Drugim elementem, który stanowi o sile tego wydawnictwa jest klimat. Utumno posiadło tą umiejętność, z której zasłynął Immortal - potrafili stworzyć "mroźny" klimat przy użyciu dość banalnych środków. Nie bawiąc się w używanie klawiszy muzycy potrafili wypośrodkować granie pomiędzy klasycznymi standardami (najzwyklejsze deathmetalowe riffy, dobre solówki, dość czytelny growling), a tremolo-rzępoleniem wprowadzającym przestrzeń do tej muzyki.
Końcowy efekt jest taki, że powstało sześć dobrych, równych, wyrazistych kompozycji noszących jakieś znamiona oryginalności. Oczywiście nie jest to twór wybitny, ale jeśli ktoś szuka dobrego deathmetalowego grania, które nie ginie w zalewie szarości, może sięgnąć po EPkę Utumno.
Harlequin
I will admit, I am a man who doesn't usually care much for Scandinavian death metal. I don't know if it's a difference of riffing style or song structure, or maybe it is the atmosphere the music gives out. I am not much of a fan of death metal bands of this period and in this area. I am usually a USDM fan, their are exceptions of course, and this is one of them.
Utumno play a more atmospheric style of death metal. They use tremolo picking, crushing slower riffs, twisted leads and thrashtastic riffs to weave some exceptional death metal. Most of the riffs are fast paced and hellish sounding, but the band switches to bone crushing slower riffs at the drop of a hat. The progressions are not always extremely convenient, but always interesting. I like the drumming very much. He doesn't always use typical beats and is often quite creative. There is no blast abusing, which is a plus. The blast beats are used in moderation and when most affective. The vocal work is also great. I really like the his vocal sound. He takes a higher pitched approach that sounds very hellish. His vocals really fits the music.
What we have here is 28 minutes(which is long for an EP) of death metal that stands apart from other generic sounds of the time. It's atmospheric, packed with riffs, memorable, dark and superior to almost all other Swedish death metal bands at the time.
