...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI



Usually when we talk about the old Canadian thrash metal scene you will mostly mention such names as Sacrifice, Exciter, Infernal Majesty, Voivod, Piledriver or Razor. Unfortunately, not many metal fans will mention Armoros- and too bad, because their Pieces is one of the best Canadian albums from the mid 80s that I have ever heard!

Unfortunately, this band has not survived, and after recording several demos and material for the debut album, they disbanded. Aside from the cassette version distributed by the band, Pieces was not released officially for many years until it first came out in 2008 by Brazilian Marquee Rec as a box, packed together with some additional recordings of this band from their past. It was finally re-mastered and re-released on vinyl and in CD format in 2015 by German High Roller.

But let’s concentrate on the music from this full length. Armoros presents here over 40 minutes of wild, aggressive, fast and technical thrash metal. There is some melody, but the music sounds a little dirty. It's not that fast during the entire recording, though. Sometimes you can find some middle-tempo riffs here and there. There are not many moments like that, though - just to catch a little breath, and back again to the thrashing madness. The vocals are also rasp and dirty – spitting the words with hatred, but again with some melody. You can tell right away that Rick’s screams were heavily inspired by Araya’s style. The songs from Pieces are well composed, technical and full of complicated tempo changes. It is noticeable that Armoros was practicing for hours in their rehearsal room, and they were pretty mature as a band when they recorded these “pieces”. From time to time, a short, screaming guitar-solo pierces your ear-drums. There's not much I can say about the drummer’s effort on this album. The drum arrangements are simple, mostly super fast and straight forward. There's even less I can say about the bass lines, which are not audible. So maybe Pieces is not a flawless album- there are things that could be done better (especially during the recording of it) but still, as a whole, it is a killer album!

Some people might say that Pieces is just another brutal thrash metal offering from the mid 80s and moreover, its production is far from perfect. But for me, this recording has something special that many thrash metal classics with a bigger budget and more professional studios lack. It is the organic aggression, dedication and honesty I can sense in Armoros’ music. It's just the purest thrash you can imagine from the late 80s. An absolute must-hear for everyone who likes old-style thrash metal!
