In a sea of bland, forgettable, and sometimes horrible bands in the modern era of death metal. One of my favorites that definitely stands out is Wretched Inferno. They’re a band that formed in 2018 in Massachusetts. Originally writing thrash metal but then moving into brutal and gore soaked death metal. In the course of their career so far they’ve managed to release 2 albums and one major EP. In the beginning, this band was very straightforward and brutal. Not to say the old releases are bad because they’re fucking awesome. But with their newest album “Cacophony of Flith” you can tell the band has become tighter and better songwriters.
First off this record is the definition of the word FILHTY. Everything from the instrumental aspects, to the compositions, and the production/ mix sounds big and nasty. This record is a straightforward beatdown of pure brutal death/osdm carnage. Filled with aggressive violent riffs, chunky grooves, and tons of blasting. Because what death metal album would be complete without blast beats? You can tell there are still hints of that pure bdm in the mix. But you also get tons of thrashy osdm flares here and there as well.
Let’s talk about the nasty production. This is what a modern death metal band should strive to sound like. The drums have such a powerful mix and touch to them. The snare especially has that perfect ping that extreme metal fans will go crazy for. The guitars for a nasty chainsaw-like tone to them, making them sound extremely fuzzy and distorted. The vocals are great and right in the middle of things. Nothing here is necessarily drowned out and each aspect of the album sounds big and crunchy as fuck. Catering to old-school death metal heads alike.
Onto the actual guitar work. Goddamn is this album riff City. There are tons of tasty slam riffs, pinch harmonics, and nasty tremolos. You get tons of those nasty brutal death metal-oriented riffs but you also get more of the thrashy osdm style of riffs as well. There are also some slightly slower sections that could be considered doomy. The guitars are tight, catchy, and hella memorable. You can tell that the band has heightened their technical and musical abilities. Because each member is firing off on all cylinders here.
Along all the blunt riffs you get a lot of really good solos occasionally. The title track is a good example. As it contains some good sweep picking. But of course this album is dominated by catchy rythmns and nasty palm muted chugging. It’s a very straightforward yet very entertaining album. It’s very tight, the hammer on’s are nasty, and the pull offs and techniques are fantastic. This is just a very well written piece of old school death metal. You even get some good 2 step like beats and d beat like sections.
Vocally this album is gnarly as hell. Much like a band like Dying Fetus or Regurgitation there’s 2 different vocal styles here. And both are balanced and trade off each other very well. You have the more gurgling gutturals and mid ranged growls. Then you have the backing vocals that are high raspy shrieks. Each vocal line is delivered with pure aggression and energy. When it comes to the lower gutturals they range from more mid ranged to pure gurgling nastiness. Overall a very strong vocal performance.
Finally we gotta talk about the drums. Drummer Will Robinson(you a homie) is a very frantic and talented musician. His blast beats are ruthless and fucking insane. He’s got a lot of nasty drum grooves up his sleeve and really knows how to propel the songs and make them heavier. The double bass work is phenomenal and he’s got some good build ups on a song like “Utheral Disembowlment”. Much like the guitars there’s a lot of thrashy sections (some are kinda d beat ish?) alongside the instense blasting. So it’s the perfect package of all things nasty.
To sum this up this album is brutal and brilliant. I got nothing but respect for these guys. And I’m excited for their next release whenever it comes out in the future. So go support these guys. And go support the band Matriphagy. As it features similar members. If you want some nasty modern brutality done right with a fantastic production value. Wretched Inferno is for you. These guys need more attention and praise in the scene. So give em a jam. Fantastic shit.
