Raw and raucous, roaring and rebellious right from the word go, it comes as no surprise to find that The Idiot Kids come from Detroit, the place that gave us the mighty MC5, The Stooges, and later The White Stripes. And it isn’t hard to argue that whatever ran through the DNA of those bands is found in action here on their debut Instants.

“Bulldozer” is perfectly named for the opening salvo, a snarling, low-slung beast of a punked-up, spun-out, garage-rock salvo, a song that echoes that famous Detroit war cry to “kick out the jams (motherflippas)”. Smack, right to the kisser!

So, with the scene set, the stall laid out, and a bloody, metallic taste of things to come in your mouth, the white-knuckle ride begins. The title track is relentless and honest, and “Time For Me” throws out some boogie-some beats and hard-wired dance grooves whilst guitars spiral out of control, basslines bruise, and bombard, and vocals declare war on… well, anyone who’s listening. This music is hot as hell and twice as hard!

And then there is “Pastor’s Kid,” which is rock and roll on too much coffee, then too much speed, and then a few lines of coke, then climbing into the driver’s seat of a Chevy Camaro before flooring it and heading off into the sunset in a cloud of dust and burnt rubber fumes.

Mad, bad, dangerous to know….The Idiot Kids are certainly smart cookies and they might just be my new favourite band.
