Jeśli czekacie na trzeci album grupy Czort, to już niebawem, bo 29 listopada będzie on dostępny, tym razem dzięki nie od dziś znanej Pagan Records. Trójeczka Ślązaków składa się z dziewięciu numerów, które zebrane do kupy dają prawie trzy kwadranse na wskroś polskiego black metalu. Czy to dobrze, czy źle? Otóż i tak, i nie. Jeżeli chodzi o jakość aranżacji i ich różnorodność, na którą składają się poprowadzone w zmiennych tempach zimne tremolo, przeplatające się z tradycyjnie kąsającymi riffami, tudzież klimatycznymi zwolnieniami jak i również delikatnie awangardowymi akordami spod znaku „post”, które niekiedy potrafią się także zamienić w całkiem ciężkie aczkolwiek krótkie dysonanse, to wszystko jest ok. W równym stopniu wszystko bangla w kwestii czystości produkcji, która zadbała o krystaliczną lodowatość gitar, wyraźne i fantastycznie brzmiące linie basu, mięciutki akompaniament perkusji, bajecznie kołyszące syntezatorowe pasaże oraz odpowiednio nagłośnione wokale, za pomocą których w różnych intonacjach i ze zrozumieniem artykułuje teksty gość przy mikrofonie. Zatem w obiektywnym ujęciu „Monumenty” to solidna płyta o czarcim wyrazie, wypełniona wieloma ciekawymi pomysłami i zwrotami akcji, na które pozwoliły w sprawnym stylu użyte instrumenty. Jednakże już od dłuższego czasu na polskiej scenie black metalowej można zaobserwować pewien dualizm, ponieważ jest on albo obrzydliwy i zły, albo posiada tendencję do popadanie w skrajną patetyczność. W przypadku Czorta ten drugi kierunek jest nadzwyczaj rzucający się w uszy. Nie mam pojęcia jak wypadają ich wcześniejsze albumy, ale słuchając „Monumentów” poczułem się wręcz zalany przez potoki ckliwych melodii, które niosą ze sobą wielką niczym tsunami falę rozmiękłego i do bólu zużytego, rodzimego romantyzmu. Objawia się on nie tylko we wspomnianych chwytliwościach, lecz także w dość naiwnych słowach tutejszych piosenek, które wykrzykiwane i melorecytowane w pretensjonalny sposób zawierają jedynie rzeczy oczywiste i są przekazane łopatologicznie, nie pozostawiając szansy odbiorcy na jakąkolwiek interpretację. Ten właśnie anturaż w moim odczuciu zupełnie dyskwalifikuje tą płytę.

Czort are another great act from the brimming Polish black metal scene. Formed in 2016 they had produced two full lengths and two splits and have recently released their third album titled “Monumenty”. I was a fan of their prior record “Apostoł” so I was excited to see where this promising band will go next. “Monumenty” comes with 9 cuts and a total playing time of roughly 44 minutes so in a nutshell it got the perfect format for this kind of music. Released by Pagan Records the first thing you might notice is another artful cover which is also a fitting reflection of the music.
Czort start off with some calmer tones in opening track “Paroksyzm ludzkości”, slowly getting the listener into the right mood. The tempo is upped in the second cut “Zjawa” which also offers a somewhat uplifting main harmony and turns into a more atmospheric tune in the middle before the fading out into more direct fashion. The next song “Kuźnia materii” follows in a similar style and it becomes obvious that Czort are not that much interested in sounding overly brutal or hyper-fast but are more about putting different layers into one single track and combine them all in a way that the music always stays interesting. They are able to attack fiercely so no worries about that, but it would not do the band justice to reduce them on the simple aspects of the genre.
Czort keep churning a maelstrom of blackened riffing that seems to envelop the listener like a slow-motion tornado until the very end. Most sections come across almost hymnal, implementing a deep atmosphere and different shades, without sacrificing their power or creeping malevolence. Thanks to a great understanding of how an album like this has to ebb and flow Czort have managed to create a masterclass in elegant songwriting and marks a high point within the genre. Entrancing the listener, this mesmerizing and monolithic piece of sinister music hits hard and leaves its mark with the commanding voice emerging from the blackness, exhorting the listener to unspeakable acts as riffs crash around it. It is the way how the riffing roils and throbs throughout the whole record with one intense harmony following the previous one, creating a mounting sense of agonized tension, backed by electrifying, fast yet controlled drumming and potent subterranean basslines.
The music of Czort comes with thunderous crashes and painful roars intertwined with some of the most interesting harmonies you will find in the genre, emitting power from deep within. The livelihood of the music bursts with triumph and reaches depths somewhere deep within your inner being. Czort have expanded their sound even further than before, and while the pillars of their music is still the same traditional interpretation of classic black metal as before, they do not shy away to explore the more atmospheric and melodic side of the genre even further. Some harmonious segments establish a heartfelt harmony capable of moving any blackened soul. Rumbling chords and sudden explosions of dissonance interact with each other and it speaks for the songwriting skills of Czort that the music never turns into an overly chaotic and anonymous mass of single notes, but keeps its structure and makes it easy for fans for dark and dense sounds to enjoy it.
“Monumenty” is rounded off by a great production which is transparent enough for all the small details to come through. The sound is clear and powerful but there is nothing clinical or sterile about it. The lyrics are once again in Polish so I cannot comment on them. Overall this album is another fantastic piece of music and I would argue that it even slightly surpasses “Apostoł”. Great stuff.
