...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI



Wydany w 1969 roku, rewelacyjny psychodeliczny album o ciężkim gitarowym brzmieniu i świetnych, nośnych kompozycjach. Jedna z 2-3 najbardziej niedocenionych amerykańskich płyt końca lat 60-tych. Niemal każdy utwór (z siedmiu) to dynamit! Amerykańska reedycja z 2021 roku, rozszerzona o dwa CD - na pierwszym z nich znalazły się alternatywne, a na drugim instrumentalne wersje utworów z albumu.



One of the best things i got into as the result of scouring Acid Archives back in 2021 during lockdown boredom. The difference maker for me is that while this is genuinely pretty "psych-y", the band rocks very hard, there are almost no extraneous elements and the songwriting is uniformly very strong. In particular, it might sound kind of like damning with faint praise, but the total lack of any chintzy keyboard or "period" sound FX really makes this feel remarkably contemporary in a way that I wish many more bands (not all!) would have pursued--and you have to add into that Murray Shiffrin's beautiful fuzz, with plenty of bumblebee G-string playing, and Mike Ratti'c cavernous drums.

It's not just the sound, though; the band is admirably punky, tribal, and frat rockin' as the situation demands, with the titular singer Morgen's ultra-delicate vocals adding what there is of a "psych" aspect. It's hard to imagine this record coming out much earlier or later than it did; it has some thunderous aspects, sounding very "hard rock", but these are masterfully integrated into some rave-up sections that I gather bands soon came to think of as a dated "garage rock" sound. To my ears, this adds a very welcome diversity to the proceedings.

Well worth checking out if, like me, you like the piercing fuzz of "psych rock" but aren't sold on some of the dodgier studio gimmicks--but you also enjoy the somewhat jammy, purposefully messy and wild psych sound at its best.
