Uprzedzam, że to nie to Atrocity, o którym myślicie. Amerykańskie Atrocity nakurwia grindcore z death metalem.

Powstali w 1985 roku i zanim doczekali się pięknego debiutu, w świat puścili trzy demosy i EP'kę. W 1990 roku Metalcore wydaje debiutancki album Infected, który mówiąc krótko zabija. Jeżeli wiecie co to Repulsion, Nuclear Death, Terrorizer czy Blood, to czym prędzej włączcie Infected, bo w kolejce już czeka kolejny album The Art Of Death!, na którym Atrocity idzie drogą wytyczoną przez debiut.
Co prawda na drugiej płycie jest sporo death metalowych naleciałości, ale stary grindcore nie zaginął i ciągle jest słyszalny, zwłaszcza w charakterystycznej motoryce kawałków.

Here we have the debut album by US band Atrocity and please do not confuse them with their German namesakes, as they have very little in common. Where the German Atrocity started out as a boring technical death/thrash act that evolved into a boring goth rock act, the US Atrocity played a ferocious mixture of death metal and grindcore. To say that they are legendary is perhaps a tad exaggerated, but the term "cult" is certainly appropriate. Their debut from 1990 is a very enjoyable blast of grinding death, sure to please every maniac who still thinks that no good death/grind has been produced beyond 1992.

Alright, let's talk music: the first thing that catches my attention is that the production on this LP is raw but at the same time very clear without sounding polished in any way. You can actually hear all the instruments and that includes the bass guitar, an instrument that's often neglected in extreme metal. The overall sound immediately grabs you by the throat and pulls you into the maelstrom of furious rage that is "Infected". Back in those days you didn't get to hear grindcore albums sounding this good, I'll tell you that.

The music is, as mentioned earlier, a mix of raw death metal and old school grindcore. The songs are short and the tempo is high for most of the album. There are blastbeats aplenty, but the individual songs have enough variation to avoid becoming boring. Atrocity know how to incorporate somewhat slower parts in their music and the way the songs are structured bring to mind some of the faster metal/hardcore bands of yore. Try imagining a cross between Repulsion and Cryptic Slaughter here, the music more than once has that old school crossover thrash feel to it, something you can also hear in the vocal delivery. The vocalist doesn't use a typical grunt but he incorporates more of a growling approach. You could perhaps think of Scott Carlson from Repulsion or Kurt Brecht of D.R.I. with a bad case of laryngitis.

So, if you, like me, get a warm feeling in your tummy (and crotch) from bands such as Repulsion, Headrot and Phlegm, I can not only recommend you this platter 'o' splatter, but Atrocity's whole back catalogue! Even fans of the more extreme hardcore punks like Septic Death or Sore Throat can join in, there's plenty of goodness to be found here for all supporters of grinding extremity!
