Ancient Death was formed in the summer of 2019 in Walpole, MA by Jasmine Alexander (Bass and Vocals), Ray Brouwer (Guitar), and Jerry Witunsky (Guitar and Vocals), soon followed by Derek Malone Moniz (Drums). Blending progressive and technical death metal with cosmic and lushful atmospheres, Ancient Death creates a unique soundscape of introspection and growth. With the release of the “Sacred Vessel” EP in 2022, the split single “Glowing Auras” in 2023, followed by “Demo 2024”, the band has continued to expand and push the envelope of honesty and vulnerability. The upcoming debut full length album “Ego Dissolution” showcases the band at their most fierce and creative thus far, further expanding on the atmospheres and mindfulness of their inner and outer worlds. Worship the true cosmic flow that is... ANCIENT DEATH!
Damn, wasn't expecting to stumble upon one of my favorite prog-death albums ever on a random May 2025 afternoon, but here we are. Up-and-coming Massachusetts rockers 'Ancient Death' come in all guns blazing on their debut full-length LP, with mostly groovy, mid-tempo, chuggy riffs permeated by soaring leads reminiscent of late era Death. The proggy and atmospheric breaks, especially when paired with the ethereal feminine vocals on songs like 'Breathe - Transcend' and 'Echoing Chambers Within the Dismal Mind', add another layer of texture to complement the ones already created by the band's versatile playing and songwriting, going from old-school skullcrushers like the first two tracks to eerie, doomy passages like those on the amazing closer 'Violent Light Decays'. The main reason I thought it fit to mention fellow contemporaries Blood Incantation in the title is because I do feel that Ancient Death manages to avoid the trappings of meandering melodic overtures that end up taking you out of the immersion of the music, something that, in my opinion, BI was unable to do at times in their last record 'Absolute Elsewhere. I get that Pink Floyd is cool, I like them too, but you still need to earn those moments through proper songwriting.
Anwyays, at the risk of turning this into a review of a different album by a different band, let's continue with my (very few) criticisms of this album, which in reality are barely criticisms - one being that it's actually quite short. Considering the songwriting heater that these guys were on, I think it would be warranted for this album to have at least 10 songs/45 minutes, but hey, who am I to interfere in their artistic process like that. They certaintly know more about making a good death metal record than I do. The other criticism I have is in relation to this album cover - the Obituary influence is already noticeable through the music, no need to make it look like a 'Cause of Death pt.2'. Very well, gonna check out their debut EP, recommend this album to anyone that will hear me out, and wait anxiously for the next release. Cheers.
