Na tle monumentalnych ruin Wiecznego Miasta rozbrzmiewają utwory z najnowszego albumu Gilmoura Luck and Strange, w tym poruszające Between Two Points z udziałem Romany Gilmour, a także klasyki Pink Floyd, takie jak Sorrow, High Hopes, Breathe, Time, Wish You Were Here czy Comfortably Numb.

David Gilmour’s tour last year in support of his 2024 release Luck and Strange has been masterfully captured in the concert film Live at the Circus Maximus and on the live album The Luck and Strange Concerts. In addition to Gilmour on guitar and lead vocals, the band on the Luck and Strange tour included Guy Pratt (bass, vocals), Greg Phillinganes (keyboards), Rob Gentry (keyboards), Adam Betts (drums), Ben Worsley (guitar, vocals), Louise Marshall (piano, vocals), Hattie Webb (harp, vocals), Charley Webb (guitar, ukulele, vocals) and Gilmour’s daughter, Romany Gilmour (vocals, harp). (Hattie Webb and Charley Webb are sisters.)

The concert film is spectacular, among the best live music performance films I’ve seen. Shot at Circus Maximus in Rome, the film was directed by Gavin Elder with a soundtrack produced by Gilmour and Charlie Andrew. It makes very effective use of aerial shots above the crowd. The film opens with shots of the Colosseum and Rome streets and buildings. An animated black cat, the subject of one of the songs on Luck and Strange, is shown walking along some of Rome’s streets in the film’s opening.

The concert set in the film and on the live album is a mix of songs from Luck and Strange and Pink Floyd classics. Opening with the guitar-based instrumental “5 A.M.,” Gilmour and company then do solid work on “Black Cat” and “Luck and Strange” from the Luck and Strange album. That is followed by five consecutive Pink Floyd songs. “Breathe (In the Air)” features great guitar and vocals by Gilmour as well as effective backing vocals. Gilmour does stellar guitar work in “Time.” Gilmour opens “Fat Old Sun” on acoustic guitar, and the song features impressive work on keyboards by Gentry and Phillinganes. When Gilmour switches back to electric guitar, the song becomes more active, with Gilmour really wailing away. Gentry provides great piano playing to back Gilmour’s trippy guitar sounds on “Marooned.” The crowd cheers loudly as soon as they recognize the intro to “Wish You Were Here” played by Worsley on acoustic guitar. Gilmour soon joins on acoustic guitar and the crowd sings along with his lead vocal. It’s quite moving. Phillinganes adds some nice piano to the mix. Romany Gilmour has a nice spotlight moment with her beautiful lead vocal on the cover of The Montgolfier Brothers’ “Between Two Points” that also features stellar guitar playing by her father. The first set closes with a great version of Pink Floyd’s “High Hopes” that features impressive work by Gilmour on both slide guitar and acoustic guitar.

An excellent version of Pink Floyd’s “Sorrow” opens the second set. It features great guitar playing by Gilmour throughout as well as solid work by the rhythm section of Pratt on bass and Betts on drums. The Gilmours share the lead vocal on “The Piper’s Call.” Nice keyboard work by Phillinganes accompanies Gilmour’s lead vocal at the start of Pink Floyd’s “A Great Day for Freedom.” Gilmour and Worsley both provide spectacular guitar playing toward the end of the song. The tour de force version of Pink Floyd’s “The Great Gig in the Sky” features Marshall on piano and vocals and Gilmour on slide guitar. The Webb sisters and Romany Gilmour also do nice vocal work on the song and Pratt adds some impressive playing on standup bass. Marshall remains on piano for the lovely version of “A Boat Lies Waiting” on which she also provides vocals along with the Webb sisters and the Gilmours. It received a big hand from the crowd at the end. Following terrific versions of Pink Floyd’s “Coming Back to Life,” which Gilmour dedicates to his wife, Polly Samson, and three Luck and Strange songs, “Dark and Velvet Nights,” “Sings” and “Scattered,” the concert film closes with an amazing version of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” Pratt does the lead vocal at the start and then he and Gilmour trade off on vocals. Gilmour’s guitar playing throughout the song is fantastic. There are shots of ecstatic fans in the crowd singing along.

The Extras that accompany the concert film are worth checking out. They include: tour rehearsals of four full songs; short documentaries shot in Rome, at London’s Royal Albert Hall, the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden and the set of NBC-TV’s The Tonight Show in New York; a brief film about the making of the Luck and Strange album; and eight music videos. Ther most interesting of the music videos is the one for “Luck and Strange,” which features Gilmour playing with Pink Floyd’s keyboardist Richard Wright. The song had its genesis from a jam that Gilmour and Wright did in 2007. (Wright passed away the following year.)

The live album features material recorded at concerts at the Brighton Centre in Brighton, England, Royal Albert Hall in London, the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York in addition to Circus Maximus in Rome.
