OPIS:

...SIŁA I PIĘKNO MUZYKI TKWIĄ W JEJ RÓŻNORODNOŚCI...

Tak, tak, ci metalowcy na początku grali hardcore.
Debiut z 1984 roku.

When I first listened to this album, which was very early in my extreme music journey, I was a fan of some of the songs but really couldn't stand the production or style for very long. Back then I was just coming off Megadeth and Iron Maiden, not yet versed in extreme or underground metal.

Upon relistening a month ago or so, I was blown away. It was like listening to a whole different album.

C.O.C. lays a lot on the table here, in a very experimental, proto-crossover thrash way that is very much their own. We've got the very obvious hardcore punk speed, very Anti-Cimex like, and prominent, explosive thrash. As you get into the album, other moments come to light that really make it stand out: Sludgy Sabbath riffage and a raw rock n' roll sensibility pepper the record tastefully. There are some grooves on here I don't think I've heard anyone else doing, that adds to the originality of this record.

The production isn't much to write home about, but in my opinion, it adds to the unhinged atmosphere of this record. Though the clarity isn't great, you can still pick out all the instruments, and they sound nice and heavy. Is everything as tight as it could be? Maybe not, but for how often the band switches tempos/genre directions/conventions, it's really impressive, especially for 84. We have raging d-beats, proto-beatdown sections, some raw thrash leads, and as said before, some excellent Sabbath-style riffs that work so well with the unrelenting speed/constant riff and tempo changes/breaks. It's framed with this rebellious rock sound that makes everything so juicy, and its own.

The vocals and lyrics have that punk charm to them and don't try to push the envelope in any respect. The lyrics, while sometimes unintelligible, never detract and are usually about personal issues, fighting oppression, violence, etc. The usual good stuff.

I'll start to close this out by highlighting just how early this is, not just for how extreme, but also the level of blend these guys eloquently put in their songs. It's 84: we've got "Ride the Lightning", "War and Pain", "Bathory", "Morbid Tales", and "Haunting the Chapel", some truly evil metal, with bands like Carnivore and Possessed priming their chops for unfettered destruction the following year. Crossover Thrash as a genre doesn't really exist yet, aside from Suicidal Tendencies' release the year prior. With the landscape of metal just beginning to take shape into more extreme territory, as well as blend with hardcore, I really feel that these guys were pioneers. For 84, it's a special record to me (historically of course, I wasn't around back then).

If you prefer the well-produced and southern rock sound of the band's later work, this ain't for you. For any d-beat and thrash enjoyers who don't mind taking it raw, bottoms up. This one is so cool. And the next one's even better!
